Below are a great series of videos that really get into maintenance and engine geography of the 2JZ-GTE VVTi. Please contact us if you have any questions or possible ideas that we can assist with developing. For all goals, there must be a solid plan of execution. But remember, once you pass the point of no return, typically after 500lbs/ft, the transmission will be the first to go and if you keep pressing your luck, eventually the internals will, too. If you plan a 500+hp 2JZ monster, your better bet is to go with the earlier model due its simplicity and straight-forwardness as opposed to the VVTi model. If your goals call for a street-able 2JZ-GTE with a very unique variable valve timing system that makes more power from factory and can be modified to make in the late 300/400hp range, then the VVTi variant is the likely choice. The VVTi is obviously a more technologically advanced engine and makes more power stock, apart from it being newer from Septemeber 1997 and up. it is a bit less complicated on earlier models, so making horsepower is as simple as what your budget allows for. Most of the 500+hp 2JZ-GTE-equipped vehicles you may see on the streets, tracks, or videos are usually(not always) running a non-VVTi version due to its relative ease of increasing horsepower compared to intake cam system on the VVTi model. This engine does have its pro’s and con’s compared to its non-VVTi counterpart. Using this variable valve technology, it makes much more torque on the low-end and much more horsepower on the top-end of the RPM range. VVTi was incorporated in 1998 models and onward and raised stock output for the engine up to 333lbs/ft of torque and 321hp. Any engine that does not meet or exceed OEM compression and performance specifications is never sold unless advertised strictly as a Mechanic's Special for custom jobs or projects. Not everyone knows that there are really two different versions of the infamous Toyota 2JZ-GTE, the VVTi and non-VVTi variants.
